Kevin Drumm - The Kitchen

An electroacoustic accordion performance from American maestro Kevin Drumm. He often uses prepared guitar, and without looking at the notes one might be fooled into thinking this is the source of the feedback-drenched modulating sounds we hear. The effect is very interesting: soaring drones peppered with the tiny modulations of accordion keys. Each cover in the original self-released CDr run was hand-painted by Drumm, although sadly none seem to be available online in very good quality. It was subsequently reissued by Polish Bocian records as an LP, then on Drumm's bandcamp page as a digital download (which is available very cheaply here, if you wish to support the artist).

Âmes Sanglantes - Rust And Steel

Âmes Sanglantes (meaning Bloody Souls) is French-Canadian Industrial/Noise/Metal artist Pierre-Marc Tremblay's main noise project. This is a relatively early release from 2001 (they start from around 1997). We range from intense, hard biting noise backed by heavy vocal effects befitting the title, to more spaced out nerve shredding sounds. The track titles are a little all over the place, but this is no real cause for complaint.

Bocksholm / Dusa / Niellerade Fallibilisthorstar / Vårtgård - Höga Nord

From Sweden's Segerhuva label. Some might call this a compilation, but as a rule I count such releases with four artists or less as a four-way split. Title translates as 'High North'. The packaging makes excellent use of antiquity and natural themes, so as the severe metal clangs open proceedings we get a sense of early modern Sweden and the scene on the cover (seemingly showing a beaten king). Comes with a 4x4 insert, with one panel for each track/artist and mostly in keeping with the label's art.

Gelsomina & Squamata - Private Live Show 29.9.2006 Turku/Finland

Collaboration/split from the two Finnish noise artists. This is ripped from DVD audio, which gives it a spacious quality. There is definitely immense energy and volume in the room as Pekka Perä-Takala (Gelsomina) and duo Erling Riibe Ramskjell and Antti Oksanen (Squamata) take turns and smashing and screaming, before joining forces for a shorter third track. One of the advantages of the irregular recording quality here is one can make out the individual layers of sound being made, from multiple pedals screaming, to what sounds like dustbin lids being smashed together, to frenzied Finnish screaming. Makes for an interesting listen.

Toshiji Mikawa / Cracksteel - Fuck My Ass: Live At BinSpark

A very good live Japanese noise recording in spite of the ludicrous title and artwork. Pairs Incapacitants' Toshiji Mikawa with Kazuhiro Matsuyama (Cracksteel) to excellent results. Mikawa's side is a fairly intricate, slow burning performance, underwritten by a haunted dark ambient drone, whereas Matsuyama is more full frontal in his assault. Particularly amusing are the fans roaring for Mikawa before and after his set, hailing him as the king, and chants of "crack fucking steel!" as Matsuyama closes.

Hampton Hawes - Jam Session

A Japanese exclusive LP, apparently never released outside of that country despite Columbia reissues in 1976 and 2014. Consider Joe Henderson's "In Japan" (or "Henderson's Habiliment", it's Japanese title): a western musician playing with a Japanese band to great critical success. As Max E. Leash explains in the introduction, Hawes had spent some time in Japan in the early fifties following his time in the military, and had become a regular at jam sessions. These tracks were laid down following his return, this time as a tourist, in 1968. The results are very enjoyable; Hawes is on top form and the native musicians put in an excellent, laid-back performance.

Billie Holiday - Solitude

One of the finest of Billie Holiday's original LP releases (this is a CD issue with four bonus tracks from the same session), and a gem of her later career. Cigarettes have slowly burned their way into the singer's voice, but nothing of her personality, her charm, her impeccable phrasing or her unrivaled feel for a song is gone. We can hear definitive vocal renditions of "Blue Moon" (despite that particular trumpet solo), "You Go to My Head", "Solitude" and "Tenderly" backed by a very strong band, the heart of which is the languid, emotional interplay of Barney Kessel's guitar and Oscar Peterson's masterful piano. There is something enchantingly complete about these songs; the mere sounding of a phrase, even half of a word from her lips, is enough for it to be caught up and swirled around the mind endlessly ("like the kicker, in a julep or two...").

Performers: Billie Holiday (vo), Charlie Shavers (tp), Flip Phillips (t-sx), Barney Kessel (gt), Oscar Peterson (pi), Ray Brown (bs), Alvin Stoller (dr)

Ray Bryant - Alone With The Blues

Bryant's debut release under his own name. The pianist is very much in his element here, feeling his way through original blues improvisations and some standards. There are some very interesting moments as Bryant holds the solo chair confidently and adventurously, clearly enjoying himself. Though heartfelt, these blue are not so melancholy.

Red Garland - Moodville Volume 3: Red Alone

One of the finest recordings of solo ballads to be heard anywhere. With his distinctive block-chord style, Garland cuts the perfect centre between sophisticated improvised music and the pop simplicity with which these standards were originally written. As he plays, one can hear the words and melodies being sung in the empty spaces between the notes. Red is at home with the songs, and the songs are at home here. Smooth, unpretentious lyrical balladry and a wonderful selection of standards.

Wardell Gray - Live At The Haig 1952

One of the final bright moments of the burdened tenorman. Gray had, by some accounts, become disillusioned with the music business. The overall quality of his output had declined as his heroin use had risen, and recording sessions had become infrequent. Three years later, in May 1955, he would be found dead in a stretch of desert outside of Las Vegas with his neck broken. As such, we hear here man-made-myth; a comet burning out in a diminishing arc away from earth, leaving only its image embedded in our minds. We think, of course, of Clifford Brown, of Fats Navarro, but also of Buddy Bolden, that great twist in the root of all jazz tragedy. The playing here is excellent, relaxed and the lineup is a who's who of phenomenal L.A. musicians in their prime. This disc was initially issued on Xanadu as "Live in Hollywood" in 1977 with seven songs; this 1991 Fresh Sound Records edition has nine, and is probably as close to the complete concert as we will find.

Dexter Gordon & Wardell Gray - The Hunt

"From 1941 to 1946, when servicemen began to drift back from the Pacific theatres, their pockets full of money, many of them to remain in Southern California, Central Avenue came to bear a striking resemblance to another street, remembered from another war, Basin Street, the thoroughfare of legendary Storyville, where jazz began." The liner notes wax lyrical on this truly historic recording. Jack Kerouac wrote of it in his seminal book "The Road": "They ate voraciously as Dean, sandwich in hand, stood bowed and jumping before the big phonograph, listening to a wild bop record I had just bought called 'The Hunt', with Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray blowing their tops before a screaming audience that gave the record fantastic frenzied volume. The Southern folk looked at one another and shook their heads in awe." There is a momentous energy to this recording. The always sublime Dexter Gordon pairs with Wardell Gray on tenor to create a never ending be-bop line of staggering stamina (each piece clocks in at around the twenty minute mark): ever-building, simmering till it boils over. There is a natural catharsis in hearing the audience screaming for more ("Go! Go!"); you can feel the musicians move, sense the sweat on their brow as they lose themselves in the music to a truly captivated crowd.

Performers: Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray (t-sx), Howard McGhee (tp), Trummy Young (tb), Barney Kessel (gt), Hampton Hawes (pi), Harry Babasin/Red Callender (bs), Connie Kay/Ken Kennedy (dr)

Hot Women: Women Singers From The Torrid Regions Of The World

Features artwork and notes from legendary cartoonist and obsessive shellac collector Robert Crumb (you can read more about this in his excellent interview with Mats Gustafsson here). This is one of several compilations Crumb has contributed art to, including 2006's "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of" on Yazoo, and his own selections on Abrams' "R. Crumb's Heroes Of Blues, Jazz & Country" from the same year. Crumb has always had a fascination with the inate power of the female form, and the striking, butch features of our cover singer here should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the terrific and terrifying forms of his more erotic artwork. Musically speaking, whenever we dive into this era surprises are plentiful. Here is no exception: the theme allows for a broad range of styles, from cajun blues to latin music to Indian and Burmese folk music. There is plenty to relax, move and impress while we imagine ourselves as wayward travelers in a bygone era.

Mo・Te - Taste Die Mad

Mo・Te (Fumiyuki Nagura) is an excellent Japanoise project and this tape is a prime example of the man at work. Grinding, dense low end and intense scraping howls make up the majority of the runtime. Originally released on L.A.-based Joel St. German's Spite label in 1998, this was given a European CD reissue on Audio Dissection/Industrial recollections last year. The original tape was packaged in tinfoil with the artwork hand pasted onto it inside a blank plastic case.

Willie Nelson - ...And Then I Wrote

A short-haired and less stoned Willie Nelson singing some of his hits as an early sixties Houston/Nashville songwriter. This is his first full length LP. There are some really excellent songs here, some ("Funny How Time Slips Away", "Crazy", "Hello Walls") written in Houston in the late fifties; others in Nashville, where he found himself by 1960. The production is crisp and clear to accentuate Nelson's sensitive country affectation. The mood is mellow and filled with pain and lost love. Classics like "Crazy" and "Touch Me" really show off the songwriter's captivating talents, both as a writer and as a singer.

Kevin Drumm & Aaron Dilloway - I Drink Your Skin

A collaboration/split from American noise artists Kevin Drumm and Aaron Dilloway. Side A is by Kevin Drumm "composed using sound sources from Aaron Dilloway" and side B is the opposite. Originally released in 2002 on John Olson's American Tapes label, then in the same year on Dilloway's Hanson Records as a cassette, then, most recently, reissued on Hanson in 2015 as a CD/mp3 with different artwork. The mood here is muted and mesmerising, with hypnotic loops wheeling their way through the cassette fuzz.

Pain Nail - Magneettinen Kohtalo

Title meaning 'magnetic destiny'. Pain Nail is a collaborative effort between Finnish noise/P.E./metal kingpin Mikko Aspa and countryman/noise/metal artist Marko Kokkonen. This is a droning, ominous power electronics/death industrial album with supernatural/pagan themes, compiling material recorded over six years from 2006 to 2012. Issued twice as an LP by Aspa's Freak Animal label in 2013 and 2015, and once as a cassette in 2013.

Haare - The Temple

Another Finnish noise act, and another harsh noise meditation on Buddhist esoteric themes. Haare: meaning 'hair' in German, possibly a pun on Hare Krishna. This project normally makes use of occult themes, and this unleashing of demonic eastern spirits is a fine example. Bells and drones give way to spiritual turmoil, screeching demons and tortured voices. Originally released on Freak Animal as a CD in 2004, but available on Bandcamp here if you would like to support Mr. Vekka's continuing efforts.

Squamata - Arrogant Absolut

Finnish "All Noise" release on US label Trash Ritual. Recalls early Sam McKinlay (The Rita, Ba. Ku.) or Gabriele Giuliani (Dead Body Love). The A-side begins low, rumbling, very dense and very raw, building into more frenetic higher end sounds; the B-side is underwritten by a driving bass drone like an engine in overdrive. Top shelf harsh noise.

Patsy Cline - Showcase

Cline's strong, beautiful voice feels its way through this collection of love songs. Her performance is very strong, if unmatched, on stirring ballads like "I Fall to Pieces" and Willie Nelson's "Crazy" (perhaps the definitive rendition), as well as lighter tunes like "South of the Border (Down Mexico Way)" and Bob Wills' "San Antonio Rose". The backing vocals of The Jordanaires are ever-presented here, but rarely in a lucid way; they serve to lift Cline on their smooth vocal wings.

A more recent release from the still very active Kohei Gomi (I count nine releases of live, new and unreleased material last year alone), this CD on Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions is a recording from 1997, apparently envisioned by Relapse Records' Bill Yurkiewicz. This is one of the foremost talents of japanoise in his prime, playing electronics entirely live (the liner notes make a point of stating: "Completely No Overdub and No Edit").

Richard Ramirez - Memorial

A CD release from harsh noise titan Richard Ramirez on the German noise/industrial/P.E. label Praxis Dr. Bearmann. The work is dedicated to Kevin Ogg, seemingly a friend Ramirez's who had passed away in 1996, just over a year prior to the release of this album. The noise here is frustrated, menacing and direct. You can feel in the title "How to Direct Your Anger", as well as in your gut as you listen, the frustration that is connected in the artist's mind with bereavement.

Charles Mingus - Mingus Plays Piano

Charles Mingus' first (and as far as I am aware, only) foray into solo piano playing on record. Audibly this is not his main instrument, but the playing here is highly intimate and personalas if we hear the bassist talking to and analysing himself, picking through past experiences, joys and woes. As the liner notes state, a style that "expresses the more gentle, the more reflective and the more innocent elements of his personality." From the first piece, "Myself When I Am Real", we are immediately struck with the sensation of being privy to a private world, perhaps what friends' might have heard in the course of a late night spent at Mingus' home. "It's not like playing at home by yourself!", he exclaims between songs, trying to get comfortable. As we progress, though, the playing is as effortless as anything we might imagine; the overwhelming love of standards and the roots of the musical tradition he became such an integral part of is beaming through.

Tibetan Ritual Music Chanted and Played by Lamas and Monks

Recorded in 1961, and free from the trite commercial new age trappings that tended to replace serious ethnographic study in the decades that followed, this is an excellent example of Tibetan monks chanting in situ, rather than in a studio setting (selling "world peace meditations" to spiritually confused westerners). Naturally, we prefer to be a fly on the wall. Lyrichord is an American label responsible for this and many other good "world" and ethnic music releases in the 20th century.

Zabelle Panosia - I Am Servant Of Your Voice: April-May, 1917

A voice of stunning fragility. There is a transcendent simplicity to these early recordings that one can only hear in music from this eracomparisons could be drawn with Caruso, or Gina Cigna's staggering 1937 Turandot performance, but even these fall short of the mark. Some songs ("Der Getso") have a familiar western sound, like operatic arias, while others ("Groung", in particular) are entirely foreign to our ears, possessing a warmth and intimacy that seems impossible unless we allow ourselves to believe it. The overwhelming impression is that what we hear here, in an era of so many distractions, is something gone from the world. Such humility, such talent, such understated brilliance and purity of expression seems to only be narrowly approachable in these fallen years.

Tom Waits - Bone Machine

One of Tom Waits' finest moments. These are songs of death, hardship and intense spiritual struggle. Waits plays out sepia-toned mysteries and tragedies, his characters ranging from the bare-chested outlaw ("Goin' Out West"), to the lonely outcast ("Whistle Down The Wind"), to the innocent child ("I Don't Wanna Grow Up"), to the mysterious, omniscient narrator ("Murder in the Red Barn"). Musically, Waits' vocal performance is as incredible as his arrangements: endlessly varied (almost with each different character), wild and robust. The cantankerous blues shuffling blueprinted with Waits' reinvention of himself on "Frank's Wild Years" is intensified here ("All Stripped Down" you could sayone of the best examples of this), and the heartfelt, boozy ballads that serve as the antidote are just as loose and wild, and the emotional potency is two hundred proof. Waits, now sober, can still inhabit a character at the bottom of a bottle ("except for drinkin', but I knew that I would...").

Carlos Giffoni - Vain

An interesting effort from the Venezuelan-born noise musician. This release fits a trend that sees artists moving from the harsh noise underground into a more acceptable sonic sphere: Dominick Fernow, Jon Borges, Loke Rabek, to name a few others. While we can lament the loss of these voices in the harsh noise scene they do often prove to be very talented in making lighter electronic music, and this is in evidence here. Giffoni drifts through modulating, melodic synths, thudding 4/4 drum beats and intricate synthesised chirps and whistles. The artwork is cheesy, but intriguing enough to match the playful, mysterious atmosphere Giffoni creates.

Sun Ra - Lanquidity

Stands alone in the vast discography of Sun Ra. Plodding, fuzzy bass lines give passage to an intense, swirling and intoxicated atmosphere. The music here has almost perceptible colour, and truly seems to direct the listener towards (and perhaps into) another plane. It is easy to become lost in the lanquidity. Richard Williams' bass and Eddie Gales' trumpet are exceptional here, as are Dale Williams' guitar and, as ever, John Gilmore's tenor saxophone. Ra himself, flirting sensuously with tonality, shows us the transportive powers of his synthesiser. "They wish to speak you..."

Yazoo - Alabama Blues, 1927-1931

An excellent early compilation of Alabama bluesmen from the unrivaled Yazoo label. The bulk of the albums tracks are the work of Clifford Gibson and Edward Thompson, who both have unique styles and some staggeringly enjoyable songs. Gibson, in particular, was unique as a musician. The liner notes state: "the semi-improvisatory [sic] nature of his guitars licks makes his style, like Blind Lemon Jefferson's, somewhat inimitable" and that "all of Gibson's solos featured instrumental breaks which were, more often than not, absent from other country blues." Musically, Thompson is just as interesting: "all of [his] blues are in the key of E, he avoids monotony by changing his vocal delivery from piece to piece, as Blind Lemon Jefferson did." Certainly a case emerges for the depth of Jefferson's effortless talents, though each musician (as well as others featured) is very much his own man. Other notable highlights are Ed Bell's guitar work on "Mean Conductor Blues", which chimes with locomotive regularity under Bell's expressive vocal, and Marshall Owens' "Try Me One More Time"a truly exception song that speaks for itself.

Blind Lemon Jefferson - King Of The Country Blues

Presented by the Yazoo label as an "in-depth documentary" of the great blues singer. The effect of this compilation of single sides on the imagination proves this accurate: very similar to reading Xenophon or Homer; while we visualise how radically different the world of the author may have been, we are struck with the overwhelming human immediacy of the works, which baffle us with ascendant simplicity, truth and pain ("the blues ain't nothin' but a good woman on your mind"). Jefferson's cousin said of him: "They were rough. Men were hustling women and selling bootleg and Lemon was singing for them all night... he'd start singing about eight and go on until four in the morning... mostly it would be just him sitting there and playing and singing all night." Jefferson would serenade criminals, bootleggers, hard drinking, near down-and-out men. The powerful dread of these songs is combined with the feeling of living life in spite of these circumstances: pain shared is some antidote to pain felt, and from death ("See That My Grave is Kept Clean"), to heartbreak ("Easy Rider Blues"), to alcoholism ("Broke and Hungry"), there is pain a-plenty on show here.

Bob Dylan - Tempest

Tempest is Dylan's latest collection of original material to date, and is a peak in his later career. The casual, jangling blues style underwriting Dylan's cool, wisened tenor is at its finest here. We climb into Dylan's semi-fictional mind world, inhabited by surly sinister characters ("I've been down and around, with the rowdy men", "Two-timin' Slim, who's ever heard of him?") and never ending encounters with transient heartbreaking women ("I could stone you death, for the wrongs that you done", "I ain't afraid to make love to a bitch or a hag"). Dylan long ago shed the lofty expectations certain elements held of him after his early career; there is a sense of relief and freedom here. The title track is a long, mesmerising account of the sinking of that ship; time slips away as we listen and feel for Dylan's various characters, who pass away in rhyme and in reality with the closing of the song. One thinks of Woody Guthrie's "1913 Blues", which surely had a profound effect on the formative Dylan. "Murder Most Foul", released yesterday, builds on foundations laid here: an extended, dream-like exegesis of an historical event. From his juvenile years this has been a singular talent of Dylan's, building into his own legend the dream-reality of American myth.

Charles Mingus - Right Now: Live At The Jazz Workshop

Recorded in an important year in Mingus's musical career and life. It was in 1964 that Mingus would embark on a famed European tour, meet his wife, and lose one of his closest musical partners and personal friends in Eric Dolphy. This was recorded in San Francisco in early June of that year, presumably upon returning from Europe. Dolphy elected to stay in Europe, and would die tragically from complications relating to his diabetes at the end of this same month. The energy from the tour is very present here in Mingus's manic scat singing ("more! more!" he shouts to John Handy), and particularly in the interplay with him and drummer Dannie Richmond (who was to Mingus what John Gilmore was to Sun Ra). Handy, who was not part of the sextet that cut a triumphal path through the European continent, is featured alongside Clifford Jordan on the A side ("New Fables", a variation on Mingus's "Fables of Faubus" which at times strongly recalls "Tijuana Moods"), while Jordan takes the horn helm on the B side. The pianist's chair here is filled by Jane Getz, who, while energetic, is quite reserved and sober in interesting contrast to the untamed and eclectic energy of Jaki Byard.

Kevin Drumm & Jason Lescalleet - The Abyss

This is the first of two collaborative albums on Erstwhile by the US sound artists (2015's Busman's Holiday can be found below). The first half of the first disc is a malaise of threatening, abrasive drones, audio cut ups and vocal samples; this drops in to a low, cavernous drone on "The Abyss" which ascends slowly into warm tones, like crystalline light appearing in the dark. "The Echo of Your Past", which makes up the second disc in its entirety, lifts us out of the cavern and presents familiar sounds: crickets chirping, birds calling, planes overhead, then draws us through a slow crescendo of illuminating drones.

David Allan Coe - Underground Album

Of course one of Coe's most controversial releases, this album (for fairly obvious reasons) was sold only at shows or through mail order via Coe's own D.A.C. label. Happily though, this is not just an exercise in cheap shock value. The musicianship is tight, Coe is on form if sounding a little strung out (one wouldn't expect a clean and sober man to be writing these songs anyway, who cares), and songs like "Nigger Fucker", "One More Time", "Little Susie Shallow Throat" and "Fuckin' in the Butt" are genuinely hilarious. Merle Haggard - Sing Me Back Home

In all senses a complete album, not just a collection to support a hit, Sing Me Back Home is one of the finest from the late singer. The title track was written for a friend of Haggard's on death row at San Quentin: "Even though the crime was brutal and the guy was an incorrigible criminal, it's a feeling you never forget when you see someone you know make that last walk. They bring him through the yard, and there's a guard in front and a guard behind - that's how you know a death prisoner. They brought Rabbit out... taking him to see the Father,... prior to his execution. That was a strong picture that was left in my mind." The themes are, of course, very familiar: boozing and heartbreak. But Haggard's voice soars above, confident in its sorrow and as comforting as the wine he sings of. The sentiments of songs like Wine Take Me Away, Where Does the Good Times Go, I'll Leave the Bottle on the Bar and My Past is Present—not just the melodies—stay in the head for days after listening.

Dwight Yoakam - Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.

Possibly the greatest country album of the 1980s, Yoakam's debut has a sleak, urban sound carried by his seamless lead vocals. Yoakam certainly has as much in personality singing classics like Honky Tonk Man, Ring of Fire and Heartaches by the Number as he does his own originals, and the two blend very well together to the point the untrained ear couldn't easily tell them a part. Yoakam is skilled at painting himself as the lead man in the picturebook misfortunes of his fast life, and Guitars, Cadillacs... is the beginning of a great discography and a gripping American saga.

David Allan Coe - The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy

"Anyone that would look at me and say I was a racist would have to be out of their mind. I have dreadlocks down to my waist with earrings in both ears and my beard is down to my waist and it is in braids... I was in prison with 87% black people and I hung around with black people and learned to sing music with black people. It was ironic that in prison the white guys called me a 'nigger lover' and now I write the word 'nigger' in a song and I am all of a sudden a racist. It is pretty ironic." Country firebrand Coe apparently no longer owns the rights to these songs: they were sold in a bankruptcy auction without his knowledge. Nevertheless, they are a stunning example of mid-seventies outlaw country music. The arrangements are tight and varied and Coe's vocals are crystal clear, matched by his mournful, if eclectic, storytelling. Coe spoke of his fondness for Kris Kristofferson, and this is definitely apparently in the tone of his lyrics, and in his vocal style on tracks like "Atlanta Song".

Hank Mobley - Workout

One of the high water marks of mid-50s early 60s hard bop. The mood here is beyond casual and effortless, with the sense of calm exertion the title suggests. The rhythm section of Kelly, Chambers and Jones is, of course, an historic combination, and as well as Mobley on top form (unhampered by the lung problems that sadly would affect his musical career significantly within a decade), you have Grant Green displaying meaty, ground chops that show him very much in his element, reaching stunning peaks and avoiding the showboating that could sometimes hamper his performance as a sideman.

Enjoyable outing from a pre-Jazztet Art Farmer. Herbert Howells - Requiem

As a student in London he lost friends and contemporaries to the carnage of the First World War. His Elegy for viola, string quartet and string orchestra, perhaps the first of his works composed explicitly as a memorial, was written in memory of Frances Purcell Warren, a viol player killed at Mons in 1917. One of his closest boyhood friends, Ivor Gurney, whose inherent mental instability was almost certainly exacerbated by his experiences in the trenches, was a later, longer drawn-out loss. Howells himself was exempt from military service on medical grounds due to the onset of Graves Disease, a condition that forced him to give up his first salaried position as sub-organist of Salisbury Cathedral (with a loss of income and independence) and for a time threatened his life—the ultimate loss.

The loss of income, security, employment, and of friends in the trenches, was not unique to Howells. Many suffered such setbacks and came to terms with them. But the loss of a child is always uniquely poignant and tragic. The death from polio in 1935 of his nine year-old son Michael was, needless to say, the most traumatic and devastating of Howells’ personal experiences. It is natural enough to expect a deeply personal loss of this nature to be reflected in any artist’s work. On Howells, with his already deeply embedded sense of the elegiac and transient, Michael’s death had a profound effect. It is arguable that everything he subsequently wrote was coloured in some way by it. Three of the works recorded here, including the substantial Requiem for unaccompanied voices, are connected in some way to Michael. None of the remaining pieces was specifically composed as a memorial, but everything on this disc comes from a mind that constantly reflected on the passing pageant of life, and is coloured by that process of reflection.

Johann Pachelbel - Un Orage d'Avril

"The pieces presented on this disc share a certain 'chamber' character, in the sense that they were surely composed for domestic use. Such is undoubtedly the case with the suites from the Musikalische Ergötzung published in 1695, where, aside from the difficulties entailed in the ‘scordatura’ writing, everything seems to indicate that they were intended for a public of sophisticated amateurs, likely toexperience great ‘musical delight’ (just as we did!) when performing this music, as the very name of thecollection suggests. The origins of the vocal pieces are less clear, and some of these arias were probablywritten for a specific purpose and for dedicatees known to a small circle of friends, such as the simplesong in praise of someone known as ‘Guter Walther’, who seems to have had a strong temperament, orthe impressive funeral laments (Mein Leben and Wie nichtig?) which are interspersed with moralisingcomments. Others seem to have a more generic meaning, in the tradition of songs to celebrate thearrival of a new season – for example Das Gewitter im Aprilen, which compares the volatility of thecapricious April climate and the constancy of friendship.

"But what links all the works on this recording, whether or not they possess a text, is their ability to conjure up painterly images. We find ourselves surrounded by sound pictures that might well have come from the golden age of Dutch and Flemish art, notably those representing episodes from everyday life. When you listen to the Aria from Partie VI or the Ballet from Partie I, don’t you have the impression that you’re in the midst of the hubbub of the folk festival depicted by Brueghel in The Peasant Wedding (and also seen in the great banquet of La Kermesse héroïque)? Don’t you get the urge to take up your lute like Jan Steen in his self-portrait and accompany yourself singing the last phrase of the Saraband from Partie VI (yes, it’s true, you have to add a text to it, but nothing could be simpler!). Listening to the Saraband of Partie III, don’t you feel the same shivers down your spine and the same doubts that seem to affect the women Vermeer painted reading their letters? And don’t the Aria of Partie V or the Gavotte of the Partie a 4 have the same half-pompous, half-comical character we find in Frans Hals’s portraits of groups of officers?

"All these musical miniatures float by, caressing our ears, like the light, fleeting April clouds that troop past before our eyes: all of a sudden the sky grows overcast and the stormy rain falls before finally giving way to the dazzling blue of a sunlit horizon. An ideal setting for portraits or scenes drawn from life in which those concerned must certainly have recognised themselves, and which nowadays bear precious witness to a bygone age that is still rich in emotions and lovely to behold... and listen to." (Amandine Beyer & Baldomero Barciela. tr. Charles Johnston. From the liner notes.)

Deterge - Anoint

"God is not afraid of new things! That is why he is continually surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways." Includes a foldout on the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries of Christ, prayers of the Rosary with a how to, and a Rosary pendant. Power electronics from Jim Haras, owner of the Fusty Cunt label. Reminiscent thematically of some elements of the work of Mackenzie Chami (Koufar, Bachir Gemayel), who has released on Haras' label. This is a harsh noise assault, layered with looping tones and lyrics (though sadly inaudible) ranging from doleful incantations to pained modulated outbursts. One can always question the seriousness with which these themes are treated in this medium (the undeniably lewd Fusty Cunt logo is still included, for example); I would hazard this is closer to the thematic seriousness of Chami's projects than the sardonic super-extremism of acts like Con-Dom.

Sick Llama - Being Viewed

A subtle drone based noise release from Heath Moerland's Sick Llama project. Moerland owns Fag Tapes, a prolific US noise label, and this is on Chondritic Sound (which is in similar standing). The A side gives us a mid-pitch fuzzy drone in the left channel, with subtle tones appearing in the right. This builds into a very deep, rumbling noise drone.

Sharon's Last Party - Bayonets To Lhasa

Sadly the only full length release from this excellent Swedish project. Bayonets to Lhasa takes us through spacious, blistering drones evocative of Tibetan ritual chant into a sick cathartic madness of drums, swirling rhythms and piercing, babbling flutes. While the title might evoke the PLO advance on Lhasa in the Battle of Chamdo in 1949, the cover evokes a different form of movement into Tibet's holy city: some fever dream enchantment into an uncomfortable state of climactic nirvana.

Segerhuva - Sweetness Will Overcome

The definitive Segerhuva compilation and one of the best noise/industrial compilations of its decade. The cover evokes a murky, sinister underworld of urbane privacy and the sound running through the compilation is sophisticated, shadowy and intoxicating to match. Alongside this, there is a raw emotional current patterned into many of the compilation tracks and the title; a reflection of the bleeding heart-red of the cover. Much for the imagination. Scandinavian mainstays Sewer Election, MNEM, Ochu, Treriksröset and Blod take the fore, with a notable Japanoise appearance from Government Alpha. One of the few Sharon's Last Party tracks can also be heard here (an excellent and underrated project): a glitzy lounge jam underwritten by an intense, threatening synth drone. This track is an excellent proof-of-concept for the whole compilation. Drug trafficking discussed in hushed tones in a high end city bar.
